What is Balsamic Vinegar?

What is Balsamic Vinegar

Balsamic vinegar evolves from northern Italy. It is made by boiling the juice until it gets a syrup-like consistency. Now, since its flavors and the aroma are all concentrated, it looks dark. Later, it follows a slow fermentation process and is stored in wooden barrels where it ages while turning to alcohol.

This dark, sweet, and syrup-like consistency is something a pure balsamic vinegar would sound like. In most of the supermarkets, it’s not very sweet, light-colored, and it has a much thinner consistency as it is observed that not every balsamic vinegar follows a traditional way to be manufactured. Whatever the type, they’re typically used to enhance the flavor of salad dressings, marinades and a bunch of sauces.

Owing to Balsamic Vinegar’s prevalence is modern cuisines, it is imperative for you to know what goes into making it and if or not you can consume it based on your lifestyle choices. Types of Balsamic Vinegar

Types of Balsamic Vinegar

Basically, balsamic vinegar can be of two types. Some can be vegan, and some may not be. One would be the traditional one and can also be called Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena DOP. The other one is the non-traditional one and also called Aceto Balsamico di Modena IGP.

The traditional one is vegan but you cannot expect the other one to be pure vegan. Once you go shopping, you need to look for the ingredients at the back and check for ingredients like caramel, coloring, and thickeners. If you find them present, it’s not the traditional one. They may not be vegan. Here caramel is the ingredient that can also be prepared from dairy and milk, which may or may not be vegan. If you are looking for vegan milk , check our detailed guide on the best vegan milk alternatives.

The non-traditional ones do not take more than 2-3 years to be completed, unlike the traditional ones, which takes ages to be absolutely prepared. The added ingredients to the vinegar also infringe on its purity.
