Is Bisquick Vegan? Bisquick Pancakes Recipes

Pancakes – who doesn’t like them? But busy lifestyles have snatched away the simple joy of cooking yummy pancakes for kids and family. This is why most women today rely on pre-made pancake mixes available at grocery stores in large varieties. Of course, they bring convenience to the table. But because they’re processed, they obviously can’t be trusted for the ingredients put therein.
What is Bisquick?
A highly popular brand of pancake mix in the market is Bisquick. You can literally make pancakes in minutes, for it reduces the preparation time and effort. Distributed by General Mills, the brand has several products under its offering – Original Pancake & Baking Mix, Complete Cheese Garlic Biscuit Mix, Simply Buttermilk with Whole Grain Pancake & Waffle Mix, Shake ‘n’ Pour Buttermilk Pancake Mix, and many more.
Which Bisquick Products are Vegan?

If you go through the ingredients listed on their website, it is revealed that not all variants of bisquick mix are strictly vegan-friendly. To make things slightly simpler for you here, we’ve enlisted various products of Bisquick which are vegan and which aren’t. Some Bisquick products including the basic original one contains shortening. Or if you want to include shortening like Crisco, then you must beforehand know whether Crisco is vegan or not. So you can easily pick the one when on a vegan diet. However, we still suggest checking the label yourself each time you pick one at the store since Bisquick ingredients can of course change without intimation.
Here are the vegan offerings from the brand:
- Bisquick Original Mix
- Bisquick Heart Smart Mix
- Bisquick Gluten Free Mix
These are safe for vegans as they don’t contain milk, eggs or any other non-vegan-friendly ingredient in their preparation.
- Bisquick Complete Cheese Garlic Butter Biscuit Mix
- Bisquick Complete Buttermilk Biscuit Mix
- Bisquick Complete Honey Butter Biscuit Mix
- Bisquick Complete Three Cheese Biscuit Mix
- Bisquick Simply Buttermilk with Whole Grain Pancake and Waffle Mix
- Bisquick Shake and Pour Buttermilk Pancake Mix
Note that all the non-vegan products of Bisquick contain ingredients including milk, eggs and/or honey – all of which are considered unacceptable for vegans. There are several vegan meal planners who include these pancakes in their client’s meals.
Also, when using Bisquick vegan mixes, a specific recipe may demand addition of milk or eggs. This is when the problem starts because the dish becomes unsuitable for vegans. We have a simple solution to this. Just replace dairy and eggs with vegan ingredients to add with your Bisquick mix and you’re good to go.
Substitute dairy milk with non-dairy alternatives of milk like soy, rice, almond, or coconut milk. Likewise, to make Bisquick pancakes without eggs, consider adding Tofu, unsweetened apple sauce, and flaxseeds. With the latter, you can make a flax egg – a vegan and cheaper option than the normal egg. This apple sauce can also be used in Apple Cinnamon Streusel on a coffee cake.
To make one flax egg, mix 1 tbsp. ground flax seeds with 3 tbsp. water. Combine well and refrigerate for about 15 minutes. There you have your vegan flax egg ready to use with your Bisquick mix, not to forget, it also adds fiber to the meal.
